The Goal & Materials
Nier was a "started during lockdown, realized I wasn't quite there" project in 2021, before picking it back up in 2023 and finishing it for a group at YetiCon. Therefore, many of the materials had swaps or were stashbusted, and this was a project I specifically wanted to use to learn molding, casting, and 3D modeling more robustly.
The 'vest' is made from faux suede, pleather, and then a stretch cotton twill for the white pants and undershirt. Faux fur and real fur sourced secondhand were used throughout. All props and accessories are 3D printed, while the armor is cast in flexible resin. -
Top + Pants
The Top | This uses a massively altered altered commercial pattern. The top is actually a boned (with rigilene), faux suede "vest" that is lined, with short sleeves in a different material. Machine stitching and machine embroidery 'patches' decorate the front, which were hand sewn on.
The Pants | This uses a standard pants pattern for some joggers. The pants are kind of like sweat pants with elastic, with a snap and strap system to hold up the accessories. The faux fur leg cuffs snap on, with the plastic, painted chains hand sewn on. The knee 'covers' (featuring machine embroidery) also snap on with a pleather wrap sewn on, making everything look separate but actually never move in wear. -
Sleeves + Chains + Accessories
The Sleeves | The sleeves are removeable faux suede with machine embroidery on top. The fur is hand sewn on and attached via snaps to the short sleeves of the shirt, allowing them to be removed for eating or heat. The 'lacing' on the side is actually individually sewn down cord, so it always 'looks' tight on the body.
Chains + Hardware | This costume uses approximately 3 types of chains, and almost 15 different lengths and 'cuts' of chains. All chains are removeable to all the hardware on the chest. Everything from the tiny metal tubes to the hooks are hand painted to match the mold/casted parts, and all chains are plastic, painted, and weathered by hand. -
Armor (Shoulder, Gloves, Legs)
All armor was 3D modeled + printed by myself (Calf, hand, and feet parts). The calf pieces were created using SmoothOn Rebound in a brushup mold, which was then rotocast and cold cast in 57D with Nickel metal powder. The hand and feet parts were cast in 45D for more flexibility with the same powder as one solid piece. With the flexibility of the armor, they can be thrown without issue and bend, so fitting in suitcases. Going forward, I’d like to redo these as separate ‘plates’ for the hand and feet so they move more nicely and are more durable.

The Halberd (Beastcurse)
The axe comes apart with a wooden dowel that screws shut and the top spike is friction fit on, allowing it to fit into a checked suitcase. The entire thing was painted with matte black, followed by Krylon silver, and then hand painted with Liquitex metallic paints. Crackle paste was used to build up texture, and the whole thing was finished with blackwashing and small highlights. The chain is removeable and is tied onto the prop after assembly.
