The Goal & Materials
The Goal | Vash was a bit of a speed, indulgent build for a shoot at the furnaces in Pittsburgh where I happened to be a cosplay guest. Since it was such a commonly done costume, I wanted to bring my own spin, inspired by live-action adaptations of sci-fi movies like Dune and Blade Runner.
The Materials | I used a beautiful poly mikado twill for the coat from Mood Fabrics, a rib knit for the top and basketweave knit for the joggers from Joanns, with some stashbusted stretch pleather for the glove and armband. The arm is 3D printed, with resin printed fingers, on top of a two stretch fabric layer glove -- a metallic two tone foil and a metallic mesh. -
The Coat
The coat was a bit of a beast, being my first real jacket. The entire thing started as a heavily modified commercial pattern, which was altered beyond recognition, including adding a rain guard in the back, altering the sleeves, completely re-drafting my own collar/hood, and changing the overall shape to masculinize my body.
The entire jacket is finished with custom matching piping in armholes and openings, rub n buff painted plastic zipper, grommets in the back, and topstitching throughout, as well as apparel interfacing on the hems and opening to give it weight like a real coat. There also custom vectored leather patches on the chest using a friend's leather engraver, all painted and machine stitched on. The entire coat is lined with a teal bemberg liner for comfort.
The collar/hood area is held up with fusible fleece, shapeflex interfacing, and rigilene in the collar to give it stiffness yet still allow it to move. It also features a cold-cast resin collar piece that I 3D modeled, molded, and casted myself. -
Top, Pants, Boots
The Top + Pants | Commercial patterns altered by myself, using knit fabrics. The inside are serged, and the top is sleeveless for ease of wear and heat-maintenence.
The Boots | Bought on clearance in black, completely re-painted by sanding and using leather paints. I built up dust and 'mud' using acrylics on the bottom as well as Mehron FX powders to make them look weather beaten. -
The Arm
The arm is a 3D print, sanded to 800 grit and filler primered, with the hands resin printed and prepared with the same primer. It's finished with Autoborne primer in black, and a mix of Createx Iridescent Teal and Detail Cobalt for the entire piece. It's all sealed with UVLS Matte. Finally, chips were added via dry brushing and sanding a bright liquitex silver, as well as lightly sanded off paint, to look like wear and tear.
The arm is hooked with 3 vertical elastic straps, with snaps on each end, holding each piece together yet allowing movement. The top shoulder snaps onto my coat. The forearm 'bones' snap onto my glove, while the wrist bracelet magnets together. The finger parts/rings simply slide on my fingers. -
Weapon and Glasses
The Glasses | I made my own glasses by buying a cheap pair, taking them completely apart, and then measuring and vectoring the lenses. I had the vector sent to a laser cutting shop, where they cut orange acrylic lenses custom made for me. I then used clear-drying glue to re-assemble the glasses with new hardwear, making them foldable and wearable like real glasses.
The Weapon | The weapon is 3D printed, sanded to 400 grit, then primed with blackspraypaint. I used Createx Quicksilver for the base before black washing and drybrushing highlights by hand with acrylics, as well as adding Mehron FX powders for a 'dust-beaten' effect along the weapon. -
