Costume Information

Materials + Prep

This is the V1 of a costume to celebrate my gender-affirming surgery. I needed something comfortable that I plan to upgrade over time. The base pieces are done, but eventually the back ropes will be added, as well as additional decorations. This is inspired by kabuki costuming, specifically how kami and gods are depicted.

Top

The top is a kimono-esque top with the sleeves “ripped off”, with scrap real kimono fabric peaking out of a loose woven cotton. The chest “patches” were vectored and digitized by me and consist of old haori fabric with couched cord on padded foam for a “3D” effect. More couched cord and detail will be added around the “swirls”, which for now are just heat n’ bonded appliques.

Hakama

Pre-shibori’d cotton (for once I did not make my own textile), flatlined for added structure. To keep the pleats somewhat creased, I used fusible thread to sew 1/3 of the way down each pleat, then ironed so they’d naturally want to “stick” together. Weathered along all seams and edges.

Accessories

Horns | 3D printed. Smooth base, and Golden modeling paste and artistic gel to sculpt the “ridges”. Painted with acrylics. A band under my wig holds magnets, and they magnet on.

Hairpin | 3D printed. Painted with Golden metallics and softly textured with Golden texture gels. Gold leafed and sanded for aged. Two clips pin it into my wig.

Mask | 3D printed, with a black base, gold foil base, + crackle medium with white to give it a distressed look, then an embossing powder along the black areas for a raised effect. Contoured and drybrushed with paint. The “hair” is strips of kankelon mixed with poly fur, “sculpted” with clear tacky glue.

Shackles | 3D printed, artistic gel medium, embossing powder, and Dirty Down liquid rust were used with acrylics from Golden. Tutorial here.
