Costume Information

Materials + Prep

Please note: this is the V1 of the costume. Additional armor + silk painted kimono will be added at a later time!

This project was a collaboration with Dharma Trading Co! All fabrics (hemp rayon, silk broadcloth) were provided by them, as well as dyeing supplies. I used this project as an opportunity to explore natural dyeing, as well as my first time doing leatherworking and chainmail. Historical research + patterning were taken from Sengoku Daimyo.

Armor

Gauntlets/Greaves | The kote (arm parts) and suneate (greaves) followed the same methodology: a historical pattern scaled to my size, 3D modeled + printed ‘plates’ finished with graphite powder, laced with sashiko thread, on a base of purse interfacing, apparel interfacing, and kimono scraps. The ‘ties’ are kimono scraps. These tie around my legs for the suneate and the kote utilize a lace up with loops to close.

Breastplate/Hips | TBD

Undergarments

Top | TBD

Hakama | TBD

Accessories

Chainmail | The chainmail was done by hand and is a Japanese 4-in-1 pattern to resemble an asonoha symbol. Since Shuro is a lord’s son, I used a less dense/open weave design, as was customary for noble classes in battle.

Obi | I am in the process of making my own 8 strand kumihimo braid for the obijime, but for now, a dyed cord was used with a suede base and holes punched, to allow it to tie behind me.

Props

Sword | The base was a premade katana from Assist, which was completely stripped of extra parts and re-painted to resemble a chokuto. The blade screws in, which allows it to collapse for transport into a blade and hilt. The hilt is finished with alcohol inks to resemble wood, while the blade itself was spraypainted with a stencil to get a lighter edge.
